Therapy
Therapists and the individuals who seek therapy all have varying ideas of what “therapy” is, but it largely consists of one simple act: talking to someone who cares. The professionals at St. Paul’s Center care about you and what you have to say and we simply begin there.
Our nurse practitioners are experienced and trained therapists and offer their clients the therapy to suit their needs in a warm, safe, inviting environment. There are generally three types of therapy:
Individual therapy: This is the most common type of therapy. It consists of just the client and the therapist. The time to meet is scheduled and is generally once a week. Sessions are generally 45 minutes in length. Our therapists are ready to engage in an array of common difficulties that affect the client, including but not limited to loss, trauma, anger, sadness, anxiety, stress and pain. Our therapists tailor the therapy to the individual’s needs and comfort utilizing multiple theories and approaches.
Family therapy: This is similar to individual therapy in many ways, but in family therapy the therapist engages a family, part of a family or a couple who collectively seek an intervention. Generally, the therapist will see the family group as a whole in a session as well as devoting sessions to the individual family members.
Group therapy: In this type of therapy individuals come together to share a session with a therapist. It is intended to help people improve their ability to cope with difficulties and problems in their lives. In group therapy a person learns that he or she is not alone in experiencing problems. It also offers a safe and trusting environment where an individual can experiment with relating to others in new and productive ways. With the understanding, support and encouragement from peers facing similar issues group therapy can be a powerful force for growth and change. St. Paul’s Center presently offers group therapy focused on stress reduction, anger management, self worth and interpersonal relations.
Usually clients begin with individual therapy before entering into the other therapy types.
Saint Paul’s Center requests that those who are psychologically or physically addicted to substances (alcohol or drugs) seek appropriate services to deal with their substance abuse issues and maintain a period of sobriety before seeking services at our office, as we believe this to be necessary to effective evaluation and treatment of mental illness.
